A Dysan Exabyte Mammoth 8mm tape used on a Sun Solaris. The software used to back data up to the tape was unknown but we managed to read the low level data to work out it was saved using ufs-dump facility. So we used ufs-restore to extract the files to USB hard drive and DVD.

Exabyte Mammoth 8mm tapes were around from 1987. A client had such a 2.3GB Dysan Exabyte tape written with ufsdump under Sun Solaris Operating System (OS). Not having a Solaris system, Exabyte tape drive or anyone who knew how to operate such devices the data remained locked in this archive format. We undertook data recovery of the tape to DVD which could be read by Windows PC.
